Past comments are coming back to bite New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, following a mass shooting in a New York City subway.
Back up: In 2019, AOC strongly opposed the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)’s plan to hire 500 new officers to help crackdown on the city’s crime-riddled subway system.
She, along with other progressive legislators wrote:
“We are urging the MTA to divest from this current model of criminalization.”
The letter warned of the “historic racial disparities in enforcement” and claimed that “communities of color” would be unfairly targeted by the new officers.
…the plan was ultimately put on hold when the covid pandemic hit.
Fast forward to this horrific shooting that put nearly two dozen people in the hospital, after a shooter opened fire in a crowded subway car.
According to NYPD statistics, crime is up 55% this year.
…I wonder if AOC still opposes additional police officers in her city’s subways?
