Booker Campaign Aide Calling for Donations to Gillibrand

A senior campaign official for Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., is urging people to donate to rival candidate Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., so she can qualify for the Democratic primary debate next month.
Gillibrand’s campaign manager, Emmy Bengtson, tweeted Thursday morning “it is not a given that abortion will come up at the 2020 primary debates. It is not a given that every candidate will defend reproductive rights as fiercely as [Gillibrand]. We need her on that stage. If you agree, make sure her spot is guaranteed.”
Booker’s deputy campaign manager, Jenna Lowenstein, wrote in response: “I just donated to ensure [Gillibrand’s] important perspective is on the debate stage. Join me!”
Alabama senators voted Wednesday to pass a law that effectively outlaws abortion within the state. The measure is seen as a direct challenge to the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling on abortion. Gillibrand has become one of the most prominent voices on the issue among Democrats, promising earlier this month to appoint only judges who would uphold the Supreme Court’s ruling if elected president.
“It is not a given that every candidate will defend reproductive rights as fiercely as [Gillibrand],” Lowenstein said in another tweet. “We need her on that stage. If you agree, make sure her spot is guaranteed.”
