A bipartisan majority in the Senate voted to reject the Democrats’ abortion-on-demand bill, which would have legalized abortion through all 9 months of pregnancy.
Details of the bill: Critics call it the most extreme abortion legislation ever introduced, and with good reason.
It would allow abortion no questions asked abortion up until 23 weeks, the point of fetal viability,
After 23 weeks it assures a right to abortion if an abortion provider decides “the pregnancy would pose a risk to the pregnant patient’s life or health.” Health is an intentionally open-ended term that could include mental, emotional, or family factors.
…remember, as we discussed earlier this week, most western nations have laws that restrict abortion access between 10-14 weeks. This bill would have gone way beyond our progressive counterparts.
Zoom out: The bill was originally passed by the Democrat majority in the House last September. It was brought to a vote in the Senate yesterday in response to the leaked draft of the Supreme Court opinion suggesting it plans to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The final vote was 51-49, with all 50 Republicans plus Democrat Joe Manchin voting against the bill. Every other Democrat supported the bill.
Senator Steve Daines summed it up: “In a nutshell, this radical bill would make the United States of America one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a preborn child.”
Thankfully, Democrats fell far short of the 60 votes they needed to pass it.
