Colombia has elected Gustavo Petro, a former communist rebel, to become the nation’s first-ever leftist president. The victory will have far-reaching impacts on American influence over the western hemisphere.
Who is Gustavo Petro: In the 1970s and ’80s he was a member of the Communist guerrilla terrorist group M-19, which carried out attacks against the Colombian government. He later went on to become a senator.
Gustavo claims he had his political awakening after seeing his father crying over the death of Che Guevara…
Gustavo’s presidential platform: He basically ran on wokeness and upending the Colombian economy.
He promised government jobs for anyone without work.
Free college tuition
Massive tax increases for the wealthy
Closer ties with Venezuela
Outlawing oil contracts to fight climate change, despite oil being 10% of the country’s national income
Not surprisingly, Rep. Ilhan Omar is a big fan. She tweeted:
“The future of Colombia is bright.”
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis responded to the win, tweeting:
“The election in Colombia of a former narco-terrorist Marxist is troubling and disappointing. The spread of left-wing totalitarian ideology in the Western Hemisphere is a growing threat.”
Big picture: This is happening at a time where American influence in the western hemisphere is weakening under Joe Biden. Just two weeks ago at the 9th annual Summit of the Americas hosted in LA, the presidents of Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala all snubbed the U.S. by sending lower delegates instead of their presidents.
Bigger picture: China is already striking partnerships with countries like Venezuela. I would watch to see what they do with the new communist in Colombia.
