Here’s your headline: Texas Governor Greg Abbott is using economic warfare to coerce the Mexican government to keep illegal immigrants away from the Texas border.
Back up: Abbott announced a series of moves aimed at curbing illegal immigration.
Bussing illegals from Texas to D.C.
Blocking key points of the Rio Grande River
Increased inspections of commercial trucks
While the media focuses on the first bullet point [which is more stunt than effective], the real powerhouse is the third bullet point.
The biggest commercial trade routes between the U.S. and Mexico flow through Texas. And by increasing inspection times of commercial trucks coming into the U.S. from Mexico, Abbott has slowed trade to a halt. And there’s nothing Joe Biden can do about it.
What is the point of Abbott holding commercial trade hostage? He claims it’s to ensure no illegals are coming across, hidden on the trucks. The real purpose is to pressure the Mexican government to agree to curb illegal immigration into Texas.
The economic pressure is working: At a joint press conference yesterday between Gov. Abbott and the Mayor of Nuevo León, Samuel Alejandro García Sepúlveda, Sepúlveda agreed to patrol and increase border security on the Mexican side to stop illegal immigration.
In exchange, Gov. Abbott then agreed to lift the extra inspections at the Laredo crossing with Nuevo Leon. But the inspections still remain in place at the three other major crossings, conceivably until their Mayors cut similar deals to stop illegal immigration.
“Until President Biden enforces the immigration laws passed by Congress, Texas will step up and use its own strategies to secure the border and negotiate with Mexico to seek solutions that will keep Texans safe.”
It was a very Trumpian move by Abbott. I’m legitimately impressed.
