Zeldin Pushes for Vote to Oppose Israeli BDS Movement

Written by on May 16, 2019

Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.R., is calling for House Republicans to force a vote on legislation to oppose the movement to boycott, divest from, and sanction Israel, Fox News reports.

“We need to send a strong statement as a body that we stand against all this anti-Semitism, all of the anti-Israel hate,” Zeldin said in an interview on “America’s Newsroom” Thursday. “Israel is our greatest ally in the Middle East. And it’s a relationship we should be strengthening, not weakening.”

The bill Zeldin is supporting, the Strengthening America’s Security in the Middle East Act of 2019, would allow state and local governments to create laws that divest public funds from groups that boycott Israel, among other provisions.

“We should be uniting Congress in the effort to strengthen our relationship with our greatest ally, we should be uniting Congress to stand unequivocally, forcefully in condemning anti-Semitism,” the congressman said.

In a press release announcing that Republicans have filed a discharge petition on the bill, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said, “House Republicans remain committed to making sure this bipartisan legislation gets a vote in the People’s House and we hope our Democratic colleagues will join us in standing up against BDS.”
